Design for Assembly, Design for Maintainability (Serviceability), and Design for Manufacturability

Module Summary

This course presents the Design Quality Index (DQI) method, originated at GM in 1980. Initially used as a quality predictor, it spread to a number of industries and there are versions to measure assembly time, manufacturability, and serviceability (maintainability). The instructor is the author of this technique.

Who Should Attend

The course is recommended for product and process engineers, and anyone who interfaces with these groups and might participate in a multi-disciplinary DFA team.

Deliverables

Attendees will be able to:

  • Make better use of the design guidelines for assembly and maintainability.
  • Use a score keeping system that makes it easier to improve, and supports innovation.
  • Demonstrate a method that is simple and quick, and requires no computer software
  • Develop assembly and maintainability scores for one of the company's own assemblies
  • Point out the areas that need improvement
  • Suggest specific ways to reduce cost or improve quality.
