Managing Technical Professionals

Summary:

It is a prevalent practice in business to promote employees with excellent technical skills to that of supervisor. However, the newly promoted supervisor soon finds that the skills needed for effective supervision are not the same ones that helped in becoming a technical or functional expert. This workshop will address the distinctive issues involved in the transition process from technical expert to supervisor or manager. The workshop will also explore the concept of the dual-career track for technical experts.

Who Should Attend:

Potential or current supervisors, managers, and project leaders responsible for managing the performance of technical professionals.

Deliverables:

After completing this program participants will be able to:

  • Transition from the technical to the leadership realm
  • Identify general characteristics and "types" of technical professionals
  • Distinguish and meet the motivational needs of the high-achieving, self-directed technical expert
  • Communicate effectively with employees with greater technical competence
  • Motivate "the lone wolf" technical expert to work as part of a team
  • Manage the performance of technical professionals
