Project Summary

IDEF1 is a method designed to help and facilitate the design analysis and communication in establishing computer information systems. Effective IDEF1X models support of the task of establishing the requirements for what information is or should be managed by an enterprise. In information system applications, IDEF1X can be used to:
· Identify what information is currently managed
· Identify which of the problems identified during the needs analysis are caused by lack of management of appropriate information, and
· Specify what information will be managed in the "TO-BE" information system implementation.
The IDEF1X, Information Modeling Method, derives its foundations from three primary sources: the Entity-Link-Key-Attribute method, the Entity-Relationship (ER) method ands a relational model.
- The original intent of IDEF1X was to capture what information exists or should be managed about objects falling within the scope of an enterprise. IDEF1X can be used to help establish information systems which includes not only the automated component, or the computer, but also includes humans, filing cabinets, telephones, etc.

Deliverables

Project participants can define information about objects falling within the scope of their project (department or enterprise.) Then they can establish how to manage the information. IDEF1X definitions can help establish information systems which includes not only the automated component, or the computer, but also includes humans, filing cabinets, machinery, telephones, etc.
